Portrait Tips

Attitude
Relax. We need you to be a positive part of this experience. When you put a little effort into preparing for the session and come with a good attitude, you have a lot of fun, and end up with some really cool-looking photographs! The more thought you can put into this, the better we can meet your needs. Be prepared to enjoy this experience, and don't hesitate to call us at 479.845.0055 if you have any questions. Most of all, don't stress!

Skin
Sunburn is probably the biggest problem for photographs. Unlike blemishes and scars, which can be removed, sunburn and tan lines cannot be fixed! They will show in the finished portrait. Sunburn can make you look red and "crispy," and it often accentuates bags under the eyes, dries out your hair and causes you to look excessively shiny. Bring translucent powder! It will reduce the shine on your skin. DON'T GET BURNED!

Accessories
As you plan your wardrobe, don't forget the accessories. The right belt, hat, jewelry, jacket and shoes really can make the outfit work.

Make-Up
Most women do a nice job applying make-up. Don't go overboard with heavy make-up. Bring foundation, a translucent powder, lip liner, a clear gloss, eyeshadow and a nice mascara. We will help you adjust your look during the session. It's easier to add more later than to take away.

Hair
If you plan to have a haircut, try to schedule it about three weeks before your photography session. This allows time to lose the "just-cut" look. If you color your hair, don't forget to cover the roots. You may want to make arrangements to have your hair colored right before your scheduled session. For guys, it is especially important in the summer when a fresh cut may reveal untanned skin.

Wardrobe
For your session to have real variety, put some time into your wardrobe selection. Don't be afraid to look good! Here are some reminders:

Make sure outfits you wear for all sessions are complete. You should dress from head to toe. You don't want to limit the photographer's creativity. Be sure your wardrobe is clean and pressed. Wrinkles, rips and stains will all show and cannot be removed. Be sure your clothes fit. Super-oversized clothes aren't as flattering in photographs as they might be in person. On the other hand, anything too tight may confine you and make you look uncomfortable. Long sleeves and long pants are best. Even the most slender person my find that an exposed arm or leg may appear larger on film. Don't be afraid to get a little creative; it's nice to have some different looks. How about something with some attitude? Try a hat or jacket to add something extra to an outfit. Bring your best and favorite outfits, but make sure all of them aren't too similar. You don't want all dark colors or any bold prints. You'll have more variety if you have some darks, some lights, some casual and some formal. For black-and-white photography, however, you may want to try a slight patterned shirt or a textured material such as corduroy, flannel, denim or wool. Decide ahead of time if you want black-and-white photos taken, and then plan a separate wardrobe.

Undergarments
It may seem obvious, but in the preparation process it is sometimes overlooked. Undergarments must be the right shape and shade for each outfit. We don't want any pantylines showing!

Babies
Bring several baby toys (that make different noises) and an "emergency" clothing change (for baby and you). Textured, plain-colored blankets greatly enhance newborn sessions.

Pets
Brush pets well to avoid getting animal hair on other subjects' clothing. Remove any matter in the pet's eyes. If possible, remove the pet's collar during the photo session. Bring small treats, water and a favorite squeaky toy. If your pet has a dark coat, wear medium toned clothing to create a unified "group" look.
